Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Unemployment in Michika Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State is a persistent issue, influenced by a combination of geopolitical factors such as political instability, resource distribution, and regional conflicts. The impact of Boko Haram insurgency in the northeastern region of Nigeria has led to the displacement of large numbers of people and disrupted economic activities, further exacerbating unemployment rates in areas like Michika (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). Additionally, political factors such as governance priorities and local policy decisions play a significant role in shaping the employment landscape.
The region’s economic activities, such as agriculture, trade, and small-scale industry, have been severely affected by these geopolitical dynamics. Local politics often prioritize certain regions or groups over others, leading to uneven development and limiting employment opportunities for many residents (Bala & Danjuma, 2024). This study will assess the role of these geopolitical factors in the high unemployment rates in Michika and explore potential solutions to address this issue.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Unemployment in Michika is closely tied to the geopolitical environment, which includes conflicts, political instability, and imbalanced resource allocation. These factors limit economic opportunities, particularly in the formal and informal sectors. The study aims to evaluate how these geopolitical dynamics contribute to unemployment in Michika and propose strategies for tackling the root causes.
