Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Unemployment in Michika Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State is a persistent issue, influenced by a combination of geopolitical factors such as political instability, resource distribution, and regional conflicts. The impact of Boko Haram insurgency in the northeastern region of Nigeria has led to the displacement of large numbers of people and disrupted economic activities, further exacerbating unemployment rates in areas like Michika (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). Additionally, political factors such as governance priorities and local policy decisions play a significant role in shaping the employment landscape.

The region’s economic activities, such as agriculture, trade, and small-scale industry, have been severely affected by these geopolitical dynamics. Local politics often prioritize certain regions or groups over others, leading to uneven development and limiting employment opportunities for many residents (Bala & Danjuma, 2024). This study will assess the role of these geopolitical factors in the high unemployment rates in Michika and explore potential solutions to address this issue.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Unemployment in Michika is closely tied to the geopolitical environment, which includes conflicts, political instability, and imbalanced resource allocation. These factors limit economic opportunities, particularly in the formal and informal sectors. The study aims to evaluate how these geopolitical dynamics contribute to unemployment in Michika and propose strategies for tackling the root causes.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of geopolitical factors on unemployment in Michika LGA.
  2. To examine the role of political instability and resource allocation in shaping employment opportunities in Michika.
  3. To propose solutions to address unemployment, focusing on the influence of local governance and geopolitical factors.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do geopolitical factors contribute to high unemployment rates in Michika LGA?
  2. What role do political instability and governance challenges play in shaping the local job market?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce unemployment in Michika, considering the region's geopolitical dynamics?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Geopolitical factors significantly contribute to high unemployment rates in Michika LGA.
  2. Political instability and resource misallocation exacerbate unemployment in Michika LGA.
  3. Targeted policies and inclusive governance can reduce unemployment in Michika LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the relationship between geopolitical factors and unemployment, offering policy recommendations that can help improve the employment landscape in Michika. The findings will be useful for government agencies, local authorities, and development organizations seeking to address unemployment in conflict-affected areas.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Michika LGA in Adamawa State and will analyze the role of geopolitical factors in unemployment. Limitations include challenges in obtaining reliable data on employment rates and the impact of regional conflicts on the local economy.
